Call for proposals - Implementing the Council of Europe Recommendation on LGBT Rights

ILGA-Europe's Human Rights Violations Documentation Fund announced a call for proposals to support implementation of the Council of Europe Recommendation on LGBT Rights. Deadline for applications: 7 November 2011

In September, ILGA-Europe held a competition in order to reach out to individuals and asked all to join the ILGA-Europe community by signing up to our email lists. The prize was a trip to Turin (Italy) where in the end of October the 15th anniversary Annual Conference of ILGA-Europe will take place. The lucky winner was Colin de la Motte from Berlin.

New Family Code in Slovenia meets strong opposition 

The Slovenian Parliament has requested a referendum on a newly adopted Family Code, which brought more equality to same-sex couples. The request came after pressure from right wing groups who managed to collect more than 25,000 signatures in two days

European Commission: Banning gay men from donating blood is against EU law

Answering a written question from Members of the European Parliament, the European Commission explained that EU law does not warrant a blanket ban on blood donations from gay or bisexual men.

Main findings from study on discrimination of LGBT people available in Serbo-Croatian

The main findings from the major study of the Council of Europe on discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity in Europe is now available in Serbo-Croatian. 

European Parliament welcomes recent UN developments on sexual orientation and gender identity

The European Parliament joined the United Nations’ call for safeguarding the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in the world. The text was co-signed by 6 out of 7 political groups, and adopted with a very wide majority.

New publication from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has published a booklet entitled 'Working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender & intersex persons on forced displacement'.

EDUCATION

Thomas Hammarberg: Schools must stop spreading homophobic and transphobic messages

Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, made a strong comment on how important it is to focus on LGBTphobic bullying in a school environment.
 
 

FREEDOM OF ASSEMBLY & ASSOCIATION

Belgrade Pride march will take place as scheduled on 2 October 

 The Pride event in Belgrade has received strong international support but at the same time there is increasing internal pressure on the organisers to cancel the Pride march due to high security risk. Organisers insist that the Pride march will not be cancelled. Right wing groups are organising a number of counter demonstrations. ILGA-Europe will be present and will closely monitor the Pride march.

Facing Facts! - Call to Action for Civil Society Organisations working against hate crime

ILGA-Europe is an associated partner of a new project about hate crime called Facing Facts! This project will explore different types of hate/bias violence and propose new common advocacy and policy tools building on various networks' experiences.

INTERSEX ISSUES

First ever international intersex forum

Between 3-5 September 2011, the first International Intersex Organising Forum took place in Brussels. ILGA-Europe together with ILGA World organised and sponsored the event.

TRANS ISSUES

As part of its programme of work to encourage the use of strategic litigation to promote LGBTI rights in Europe, ILGA-Europe is holding a one-day training session on litigation in the field of the rights of trans people, in association with Transgender Europe.

Stop Trans Pathologization 2012 publishes English version of 'Reflections on Trans Depathologization and Health Rights'
 
The English (and Portuguese) translations of the Stop Trans Pathologization 2012-campaign document titled 'Reflections on Trans Depathologization and Health Rights' published in Spanish in July 2011, is now available.

Join the global effort toward ICD reform and trans depathologisation

GATE - Global Action for Trans* Equality has started a campaign to promote the the process of reviewing the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) by the World Health Organization. The proposals must be sent to the WHO working group by mid December 2011.

European Parliament asks WHO to depathologise transgender identities

The European Parliament adopted a resolution which calls on the World Health Organization to withdraw gender identity disorders from the list of mental and behavioral disorders.

David Kato Vision & Voice Award

The David Kato Vision & Voice Award will be awarded annually, on Human Rights Day (10 December), to an individual who demonstrates courage and outstanding leadership in advocating for the sexual rights of LGBTI people, particularly in environments where these individuals face continued rejection, marginalisation, isolation and persecution. ILGA-Europe is a part of the advisory committee.
 
 

Conference - Good Practices in Gender Mainstreaming: Towards Effective Gender Training

The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) is organising a conference on gender training in Brussels on the 28 November 2011.
