Council of Europe Secretary General condemns propaganda bill in Russia

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjorn Jagland, spoke out against the proposed "propaganda" law in St. Petersburg.

Catherine Ashton and MEPs receive petition on freedom of speech in Russia

The High Representative of the European Union Catherine Ashton and Members of the European Parliament received a petition with almost 250,000 signatures, urging them to support the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people in Russia. 24 hours after the petition was received, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it “condemns the recent proposals to criminalise public information about sexual orientation and gender identity in various Russian regions and at federal level”.

Historic report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

A historic report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on discriminatory laws and practices and acts of violence against individuals based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. Several times the report refers to the work of ILGA, and the report quotes the joint ILGA-Europe and IGLYO publication “Social Exclusion of Young Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People in Europe".

ILGA-Europe members invited for Hillary Clinton landmark speech to the United Nations

LGBTI activists from all over the world were invited to Geneva, when the Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State of the United States, held a her landmark speech supporting the rights of LGBT people. Activist from GenderDoc M (Moldova), Russian LGBT Network, Lithuanian Gay League and Kontra (Croatia) took part in Geneva.

Ban Ki-moon calls homophobic bullying ‘a moral outrage, a grave violation of human rights'

In a message given during an event on ending violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, the General Secretary of the United Nations strongly urged the Member States to work harder to protect young LGBTI people against homophobic bullying, associated violence and discrimination.

The Special Rapporteur of the United Nations on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, Maina Kiai, is seeking feedback via a questionnaire, towards his first thematic report.

Joining forces against homo- transphobic hate crime in The Hague

The closing conference of the ILGA-Europe project ‘Working with the police and challenging hate crimes in Europe 2008-2011’ was held in The Hague on 8 and 9 December 2011. The project was funded by the Dutch government and also supported by the European Union.

First hearing in the European Court of Human Rights on second parent adoption in same-sex families

The European Court of Human Rights held its first public hearing on 1 December 2011 in the case of X. and Others v. Austria. The case concerns the complaint by two women, who live in a stable same-sex relationship, after an Austrian court refused to grant one of the partner's right to adopt the son of the other partner (second-parent adoption).

UK publishes its first National Transgender Action plan

The document sets out the specific actions for the government of the United Kingdom to advance trans equality. It includes firm commitments to improve the lives of trans people and support businesses and public bodies so they have the right tools to support trans people.

Call for proposals: Fundamental Rights and Citizenship "Action grants" 2011-2012

The European Commission has launched a call for proposals for transnational projects that promotes the development of a European society based upon respect for fundamental rights, fighting against racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism and promoting better interfaith and intercultural understanding and improved tolerance in the EU. Deadline for submission of proposals: 13 March 2012, 12.00 CET
