The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjorn Jagland, spoke out against the proposed "propaganda" law in St. Petersburg.

Catherine Ashton and MEPs receive petition on freedom of speech in Russia
The High Representative of the European Union Catherine Ashton and Members of the European Parliament received a petition with almost 250,000 signatures, urging them to support the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people in Russia. 24 hours after the petition was received, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it “condemns the recent proposals to criminalise public information about sexual orientation and gender identity in various Russian regions and at federal level”.

Launch of major study into lives of older LGBT people in Ireland
Brian Purcell, Secretary General of the Department of Justice launched Visible Lives, a major new study identifying the experiences and needs of older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Ireland. The research, commissioned by GLEN and which has been supported by the HSE and the older people's advocacy group, Age and Opportunity is the first study specifically addressing the needs of this part of the population.

Historic report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights
A historic report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on discriminatory laws and practices and acts of violence against individuals based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. Several times the report refers to the work of ILGA, and the report quotes the joint ILGA-Europe and IGLYO publication “Social Exclusion of Young Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People in Europe".

In a message given during an event on ending violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, the General Secretary of the United Nations strongly urged the Member States to work harder to protect young LGBTI people against homophobic bullying, associated violence and discrimination.

First hearing in the European Court of Human Rights on second parent adoption in same-sex families
The European Court of Human Rights held its first public hearing on 1 December 2011 in the case of X. and Others v. Austria. The case concerns the complaint by two women, who live in a stable same-sex relationship, after an Austrian court refused to grant one of the partner's right to adopt the son of the other partner (second-parent adoption).

Hungarian Parliament debates homophobic family protection bill
After adopting a constitution that defines marriage as a union between a woman and a man, the Hungarian Parliament is currently debating a bill on family protection that would only consider households based on marriage or filiation as family.

Austrian Courts: No protection for lesbian employee
A lesbian employee decides to leave a company after she complains against discrimination by a colleague which caused the directors to pressure the woman to sign consensual termination of contract, otherwise she would be dismissed. The Austrian Supreme Court sees no disadvantageous treatment and declares the actions of the company lawful.
